Module 1

Raw materials and ceramic mixes: technological features for the finished product.

This module is aimed at presenting to the participants the techniques currently used to evaluate new raw materials also in view of the definition of quality control plans for the productions.

The main object will be the analysis of the structure of ceramic raw materials and the definition of criteria to develop new mixes and/or to modify the existing ones, in the frame of implementing and maintaining the production quality control.

Module 2

Grinding and ceramic body preparation

This module presents the technologies for the preparation of ceramic body with the aim of:
  • achieve a better understanding of the processes employed in the production of ceramic body;
  • make easy the technicians to individuate the best body preparation technology as a function of the raw material in use;
  • manage the production processes in the best possible way in order to obtain high production efficiencies, especially in terms of product quality.

Module 3

Pressing of ceramic tiles

This module presents the technology for the shaping of ceramic tiles with the aim of:

  • achieve a better understanding of the process of forming employed in the production of ceramic tiles;
  • manage the pressing process in the best possible way in order to obtain a high production efficiency, especially in terms of product quality.

Module 4

Drying and firing of ceramic tiles

This module presents the technology for the drying and firing of ceramic tiles with the aim of:

  • achieve a better understanding of the drying and firing processes, taking into account both traditional sized tiles and big-sized tiles and slabs;
  • manage the drying and firing processes in the best possible way in order to obtain a high production efficiency, especially in terms of product quality.

Module 5

Tile manufacturing defects: Diagnosis and therapy

Aim of the module:

  • illustrate the relationships between the more common defects that can occur in the production of ceramic wall and floor tiles (double fired and single fired ware, porcelain stoneware) and the process parameters in the various phases of the production process;
  • manage the production processes in the best possible way in order to avoid manufacturing defects.

Module 6

Process and product controls: When and how, the management

For each step of the production cycle, from the reception of raw materials for body and glazes to packaging after sorting:

  • individuation of critical steps and planning of type and frequency of controls
  • definition of acceptance parameters and creation (when applicable) of quality control charts
  • examples of registration sheets; handling of non-conformities

Module 7

The international technical standards for ceramic tiles

This module will approach measurements and testing for ceramic tiles according to the international standards.

At the end of the course the participants will be able:

  • to perform correctly measurements and testing on ceramic tiles, to evaluate the meaning of the results in view of possible environments of destination
  • identify and implement the main technical standards in force at national and international level.

Module 8

The plant as a whole

This module will address the holistic point of view to get the best results from production.

The optimal combination of machinery with human resources is the only way for a manager to achieve his goals. Thanks to other modules of the course the participants will know very well every single step of the production, in this module they will improve their ability to optimize the right mix: maximum production, best quality and minimum costs.
